Become a champion

Whether you are a healthcare leader, policymaker, funder, service provider, researcher, or community advocate, there is a role you can play in strengthening the response to intimate partner violence.

1 in 3 women in Canada experience violence from an intimate partner at some point in their lives.

  • The struggle

Women experiencing partner violence access health care at high rates and are left to navigate complex healthcare challenges on their own.

  • The challenge

Under current systems, support is often short term or crisis-focused and referrals don’t always match the women’s needs.

  • The solution

iHEAL is a community-based program led by women’s priorities and delivered by specially trained nurses aiming to provide prioritized, proper care.

The iHEAL program is an effective evidence-based solution

Appropriate for women from all backgrounds, iHEAL is a community-based program.

  • Led by the women’s own priorities
  • Delivered by specially trained Registered Nurses
  • Provides support over 6-7 months
  • Addresses health, well-being, safety, relationships and more

Developed and tested in Canada

iHeal has proven long-term benefits for women’s health and safety from within the health care system.

How the program works

iHEAL is delivered by a specially trained Registered Nurse who works in partnership with the woman over time.

  • Typically, 10-18 sessions over 6-7 months
  • Flexible scheduling based on each women’s preferences
  • Delivered in way that prioritize privacy, safety, and comfort
  • Session may take place in person, by phone, or by video conference, with optional text-based support

What is a champion?

Our vision is to integrate iHEAL within community-based health services in every province and territory, so that any woman experiencing IPV can access the program and benefit from it. Achieving that vision takes more than one organization. It takes champions who believe that women deserve access to long-term, health-focused support.

Intimate partner violence has lasting impacts on women's health, safety, and economic stability. These effects extend beyond individuals, placing ongoing demands on health, social, and community systems.

While crisis intervention remains essential, many women continue to face long-term health and recovery needs after the immediate crisis has passed. iHEAL was designed to fill this gap by providing evidence-informed, nurse-led support that helps women rebuild their health, strengthen their capacity, and navigate complex systems of care.

Why Champion iHEAL?

Championing iHEAL means supporting an approach that:

  • Improves health outcomes and quality of life
  • Reduces the long-term impacts of violence
  • Strengthens coordination across health and community services
  • Builds capacity within existing healthcare systems
  • Supports long-term recovery beyond crisis response

It was nice talking openly about the abuse and not being judged, not having that person look at you like you were crazy for staying. The nurse seemed to understand that leaving is hard.
